Curated Raw Materials

Materials

Our knives are built with materials proven in demanding environments: reclaimed hardwoods from the maritime industry, CPM MagnaCut steel, and brass fasteners. Each was chosen for long-term reliability, not first impressions.

Hardwoods with a Maritime Past

Teak, mahogany, and sapele have been used on working boats for generations because they perform where other woods fail. Dense, stable, and naturally resistant to moisture and aging, they remain comfortable in hand while standing up to years of use.

We reclaim these hardwoods from retired boats and boat builders in the Chesapeake Bay region, extending the life of material already proven on the water. Each handle carries subtle variations—grain patterns, weathering, small imperfections—that reflect its prior service. These marks develop further character as the knife is used and cared for.

CPM MagnaCut Steel

MagnaCut is a modern stainless steel that balances edge retention, toughness, and corrosion resistance without compromise. It allows for thin, precise edges that stay sharp through daily kitchen work, even in wet conditions.

Unlike high-carbon steels, MagnaCut doesn't require special care. Each blade is heat treated, ground, and finished by hand for consistency and long-term performance.

Brass Fasteners

Brass has secured teak decks and fittings on boats for centuries. It resists corrosion, remains stable in contact with wood, and can be serviced without damaging surrounding material.

We use brass screws for the same reasons. They hold securely while allowing for maintenance or repair over time. As brass ages, it develops a soft patina that reflects use, not deterioration.

Built to Last

These materials age honestly, improve with care, and remain worth keeping long after novelty fades. Together, they reflect our belief that good tools should feel considered, stay reliable, and remain in service
